Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting, the 2014 Chevalier Montrachet Grand Cru from Philippe Colin has a wonderful bouquet with chalk dust-infused citrus fruit, gunflint and just a hint of pear drop. However, underneath this all lies wonderful mineralité. The palate is well balanced with vibrant acidity, saline and with an intense, structured finish that lingers in the mouth. You can feel the presence of this grand cru: a class act that is going to give some lucky owners a lot of drinking pleasure. Intellectual and thrilling.

(the highest in acidity of these 2014s, at 4.7 grams per liter): Deeply pitched aromas of peach, nectarine, menthol and nutty oak. Rich, pliant and deep, with a lovely sugar/acid balance, but ultimately less powerful than the Demoiselles, as in 2015. Finishes rich but bone-dry, with strong soil-driven salinity and sappy rising length. The most tannic of this set of 2014s, and built to age.

(from the upper part of this grand cru): Tasted from a new barrel: Aromas of apple, menthol, crushed stone and spicy oak, with a topnote of lavender. Densely packed, plush and fine-grained, with the crushed-stone minerality intensifying the mid-palate. Tasted from a 2013 barrel: Sexy nut oils on the nose. More sappy and savory on the palate and very long, subtle and linear on the back end. Left lime and floral notes in the empty glass.
