Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Reignot has a very reduced nose, so much so that it was difficult eking much out of the glass. The fruit feels darker than Cathiard's Vosne en Orveau 2012 - black plum and blackcurrant leaf, just a touch of morel, but it remains anchored to the stemware. Possibly this is a case of insufficient aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit. The acidity is nicely judged and imbues the wine with balance and freshness, although I would have preferred more detail and personality on the tea-leaf stained finish that shows bona fide class.

Flashy and opulent to the core, the 2012 Vosne-Romanée Aux Reignots wraps around the palate with superb depth and intensity. Dark red cherries, plums, spices and new leather blossom as the flavors build to the powerful finish. The Reignots is often quite racy and exuberant. In 2012, that signature is especially evident. What a gorgeous wine this is.

Healthy dark red. Sappy, deep, showy aromas of raspberry, exotic spices, minerals and crushed rock. Densely packed and creamy but almost magically light on its feet in the early going. Wonderful subtlety and restrained sweetness to the flavors of dark berries, red licorice, bitter chocolate and crushed stone. A note of noble reduction only adds to this wine's sex appeal. The tannins are in perfect harmony on the very long, ripe back end. Great potential here.

Dark crimson; always a very deep colour. Mossy intense nose, so much more hidden than the 2013s tasted alongside. Broad and rich and sweet. More density and more obvious tannin than the 2013 but less acidity. Really interesting to compare! They taste as though they will definitely close up but there is intensity and depth here. Solid mass! (JR)
