The 2005 Booker Vineyard Syrah Fracture is 100% Syrah that is completely destemmed and aged for 18 months in 100% new oak. Simply a stunning bottle of wine that has cassis, blackberry, spice and vanilla aromas literally jumping from the glass and despite the exuberance and lofty alcohol, there’s not a hint of heat and the fruit has incredible levels of richness. Full bodied and builds in the mouth, this has nice acidity, perfect balance and a long finish.

(16.5% alcohol) Inky violet. Strongly spiced raspberry and cherry on the nose, with sexy floral and black pepper qualities adding interest. Brisk and focused, with juicy dark berry flavors, silky tannins and energizing acidity on the close. More elegant and restrained than the Vertigo, benefiting from an additional boost of vibrant minerals on the finish.

The 2005 Fracture, which is virtually all Syrah, is even better than the Vertigo, more structured, with even more fruit and intensity and long, heady blackberry and cassis flavors intermixed with some crushed rock and floral notes. It should drink nicely for a decade. 2005 marks the debut vintage of Booker Wines, which is a 40-acre vineyard just to the west of Highway 101 on a beautiful hillside not far from the L’Aventure winery. The wines are made by Justin Smith at Saxum, and that no doubt explains their impeccable quality out of the gate. The two most impressive wines in each flight are the 100% Grenache cuvee of The Ripper, which is aged in larger demi-muids prior to bottling. Tel. (805) 237-7367; Fax (805) 237-7368
