Good deep red. Superripe aromas of kirsch , licorice, violet, spices and earth. Lovely high-pitched wine but with an almost decadent richness. Not overly sweet for all its size and opulence. This impressively rich wine has an almost medicinal reserve, which suggests it will be better for patience. Finishes with big but fine-grained tannins and superb length, leaving an intriguing earthy perfume in the empty glass. "My hope was that this vintage would be approachable young," noted Jean-Nicolas Meo in November, "but the wines are more tannic than I thought. Most of them will probably need ten years. The '99s, for example, are beginning to be a bit more drinkable now."

The 2009 Corton-Clos Rognets impresses for its classy, understated personality. Clean saline notes frame the fruit nicely through to the finish, where a final blast of black fruit informs the finish. Today the Clos Rognets appears to holding back a lot of its potential. I would not be surprised to see the wine fill out nicely with bottle age. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2034. Jean-Nicolas Meo began harvesting on September 12. He did 17-18 days of cuvaison and did one racking before the wines were prepared for bottling. I was not able to taste a handful of wines that were racked just before my visit, including the Cros Parantoux. Meo is among the growers who believe the 2009s will age well on their depth of fruit. Scented and just very slightly tarty. Big and sweet and smooth but not nearly as exciting as the Clos Vougeot. Chewy, almost rasping finish. (JR)

Very ripe aromas of kirsch, chocolate, smoke and earth. Fat, smooth, sweet and full, with hints of chocolate and smoked meat. A velvety, fine-grained texture is enlivened by good mineral energy. Has the mid-palate stuffing to buffer its ripe tannins.
