Tasting notes
The 2008 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Vergelesses has been drinking beautifully for the last couple of years, and this bottle was as lovely as ever, bursting from the glass with expressive aromas of Giotte cherry, potpourri, woodsmoke and orange rind. On the palate, it's medium-bodied, sapid and melting, with a juicy core of fruit that fleshes out with air, concluding with a long, savory finish. I'd be inclined to start pulling corks now, but readers looking for a more tertiary expression of Savigny will follow this Vergelesses with pleasure for the better part of a decade.

A little spindly. But richer than the Perrières. Clean cut and crystalline but don’t bother unless you like really precise white burgundy. (JR)
