In 2005, the grapes were harvested with little botrytis, good acidity and very small yields. The dark golden to apricot colored 2005 Riesling Clos Saint-Urbain Rangen de Thann opens with a deep and rich yet pure and spicy, really dark and smoky-toned bouquet with mocha, saline, deep mineral and earthy notes. Full-bodied, substantial and very mineral, this is another really dry, pure, finessed and complex Rangen with persistent salinity and tension. A classic. It was bottled after a speedy fermentation in September 2006 with 13.5% alcohol and 4.3 grams per liter of residual sugar. Tasted as part of the Rangen Riesling vertical in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, January 2024.

Pale yellow-gold. Musky aromas of ripe apricot, smoked meat and minerals. Silky in texture and superrich but downright steely today. Very dry (less than three grams of r.s.) and unforgiving wine, and yet this seems purer and finer than the 2004. I wouldn't think about pulling a cork for at least three or four years, if not considerably longer than that. Humbrecht noted that both the '04 and '05 Rangens are much drier than the rieslings he produced from this grand cru vineyard in many earlier vintages.
