This bottle travelled with Eric from Burgundy. Beautiful vibrant ruby colour, explosive peony fruit, more character than the bruised peaches often typical of the vintage. Succulent, rounded gorgeous. This does not sit in the classic line, showing maybe some heat at the end, but not enough to take away the pleasure.

A ripe but not roasted and highly expressive nose features notes of dark raspberry, black cherry, spice and earth notes that are complemented by spicy plum and a smoky perfume that is akin to musk. The rich, intense and full-bodied flavors are surprisingly supple compared to the average 2003 today yet there is a solid lashing of sap-buffered tannins on the powerful, lingering and impeccably well-balanced finish. Like the ’03 Chambertin, this too should be capable of aging for a very long time though it is sufficiently accessible that it wouldn't be a vinous crime to open bottles after only a few more years of cellar time. Loads of spices are intermingled with blackberries and black cherries in the wonderful aromatics of the 2003 Chambertin-Clos de Beze. A bold, ample, medium to full-bodied wine, it expands on the palate, revealing great breadth and richness. Hugely spicy, this candied blackberry-dominated effort sports a persistent finish crammed with solid tannin. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2020. Importer: Frederick Wildman & Sons, New York, NY; tel.
