Currants, smoke, tobacco, chocolate, mineral, spice, and floral nuances all emerge from the 2010 La Mondotte, a brilliant blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc that comes from a 12-acre site of limestone soils located just above Pavie. A full-bodied, deep, layered, and powerful wine with gorgeous tannins and overall balance, it's just about pure perfection in a glass. It benefits from air if drinking any time soon, and I suspect it has another two decades of prime drinking ahead of it. Drink 2025-2050.

The 2010 La Mondotte has an open, airy bouquet with lifted red cherries and blackberry fruit, crushed rose petals and a touch of Chinese 5-spice. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, fleshy and slightly ferrous. What I appreciate is the harmony and silkiness towards the finish, something missing in some other Saint-Émilion crus. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 10-Year On Bordeaux horizontal.

Deep garnet in color, the 2010 La Mondotte has a lifted nose of prunes, baked black cherries and balsamic with touches of spice cake, hoisin and smoked meats. The concentrated, full-bodied palate has compelling freshness, sporting a firm, grainy texture and loads of earthy/savory layers, finishing with epic length.

Tasted blind. Opaque deep garnet with bricky rim. Rich, ripe and sweet on the nose – bags of fruit and oak spice and sweetness. A touch minty too. Oak is really too dominant even with the masses of fruit. A bit bombastic and the acid/tannin effect is tough on the finish. (JH)
