The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Blueline is a little more inward and mineral-driven in style than the Hourglass Cabernet. Bittersweet chocolate, dark cherries, violets and spices meld together effortlessly. Today the 2012 is a bit inward and reticent, but it should start to open in another year or two.

The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Blue Line, which sees about 70% new oak, is a sexy, open-knit, lush, concentrated wine offering notes of fruitcake, blackcurrants, cedarwood, underbrush and wood spice. Powerful yet silky smooth, it should provide plenty of pleasure over the next 10 years.

The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Blueline is fabulous. Dark, rich and sumptuous, the 2012 is endowed with serious depth and intensity. Dark red/black fruit, smoke, tar, licorice and melted road tar meld together in a dark, brooding Cabernet Sauvignon endowed with tremendous resonance and sheer power. An inky, explosive finish rounds things out in style. The Blueline is more immediate than the Hourglass.

The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Blueline has developed beautifully since I last tasted it. Dollops of Merlot and Petit Verdot add shades of dimension. Black cherry, plum, espresso, licorice and chocolate build nicely as this deep Calistoga Cabernet shows off its personality. The 2012 may be a bit monolithic, but this is Calistoga, after all. The Blueline is pretty impressive given that this is the first vintage under the direction of Tony Biagi, and that so many parts of farming and winemaking were being re-evaluated at the time,
