The 2016 Nuits-Saint-Georges Clos des Fôrets-Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a rather muted nose compared to the 2015, does not quite "sing", perhaps a wine discombobulated by the frost that year. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. The whole bunches neatly subsumed, touches of cassis and dark cherries, a pinch of sea salt towards the finish that is very persistent. Fine, although the 2015 has more character. Tasted at the Domaine de L’Arlot tasting at La Cabotte in London.

Dense garnet. Glorious array of aromas, well knit. Soft and evolved. Lots of charm and richness with structure but no excess of tannins at this stage. Clean, energetic finish. This could only be a fine burgundy! (JR)

Very deep crimson. Edgy with lots of energy and charm. The first wine I have been tempted to swallow. Real texture and masses of crunchy fruit. (JR)

(40% vendange entier ; 50% new oak; carrying a natural pH of 3.48; the crop was 70% lower than normal): The freshest and darkest color so far among these '16s: deep red with ruby highlights. Slightly reduced aromas of black raspberry, musky espresso and dark chocolate. Boasts a penetrating sweetness and almost liqueur-like ripeness but with enough energy and muscularity to avoid coming off as heavy; this wine has 14% alcohol, vs. 13.5% for the estate's other crus, but it's buffered by sound acidity. Quite rich and full, with licorice and spice notes from the stems contributing lift. This broad, slightly aggressive wine finishes with a firm tannic spine for aging.
