The 1994 Sammarco is fabulous. Still deep, dark and concentrated, the 1994 possesses remarkable density and sheer power. The only problem with the 1994 is that it still isn't ready to drink! That's how intense the flavors and structural elements are. This is the first vintage Luca di Napoli made after returning to co-manage his family's estate.

The dark ruby/purple-colored 1994 Sammarco, a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Sangiovese, reveals aromas of lead pencil, charred leather, black cherries, and toasty oak. With moderately high tannin, and a more angular, austere personality than is generally found in Sammarco, this very good to excellent effort will benefit from 1-2 years of cellaring. It should keep for 12 or more years. Castello dei Rampolla has long been one of my favorite Tuscan producers. I began purchasing their wines with the 1983 Sammarco. A recently drunk 1985 Sammarco was still in terrific shape, and it continues to behave like a top-class Graves from Bordeaux. Importer: Vias Imports, New York, NY; tel. (212) 629-0200
