Score 91/100 · Drink 2022-2036, Neal Martin, Mar 2023

The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Village has quite a potent, an almost atypically ostentatious bouquet of red fruit that is in keeping with the vintage and lacks the clarity of the 2010. Yet, with aeration, it seems to clarify and become irresistible with rose petals and violet plumes. The palate is medium-bodied yet certainly more decadent than Mugnier's usual style, yet likewise, it improves in the glass and eventually outclasses the 2010 tasted directly alongside. Wonderful. Tasted at lunch during Burgfest.

The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny boasts gorgeous depth and elegance at this level. Sweet hard candy, flowers and licorice are some of the many nuances that emerge from a wine that represents a quintessential expression of Chambolle and the vintage. The 2009 is intensely perfumed, sexy and inviting. It is a great introduction to the wines of Frederic Mugnier.

Frederic Mugnier insists that his 2009s will outlive his 2010s. Tasting these 2009s from bottle, it hard to argue with that view. The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny shows excellent up-front juiciness in a round, accessible style best suited to near-term drinking. The sweet, perfumed aromatics flow through gracefully to the supple, caressing finish. The Chambolle is made from the village portion Le Combe d'Orveaux and the 1er Cru Les Plantes. The fruit from both parcels is vinified separately, then blended after a year of élévage.
