The 2005 Château Gloria was disappointing, with a medium-bodied, dry, austere style that lacked charm. Let’s hope this was an off bottle.

Deep plum in colour, medium intensity with consistency of colour from edges through to core, this rolls out notes of cigar box, black cherry, blackberry, campfire, damson, mandarin peel and turmeric spice. Love the smoky notes in St Pierre, a real signature of the wine. Petit Verdot plays a big role in the depth and character. 40% new oak, harvest September 22 to October 5, 46hl/h yield. Tasted blind. Blackish crimson. Sweet start on the nose. But then it lacks a bit of freshness. Heavy, rather brutal tannins on the end. Shame – just a bit overdone. (JR)

This wine is glorious – so to speak – with loads of exuberant fruit and plenty of cedary forest floor, Christmas fruitcake, blackcurrant and cherry fruit. This dark ruby/purple-colored wine is again an over-achieving beauty. Drink it over the next 15 or so years.

Gloria

The modest Ch. Gloria was only created in the 1940s, when Henri Martin – a cooper – purchased some vines. With parcels dotted in amongst the region’s Classed Growths, it produces impressive wines. Today it's managed by Vanessa and Jean Triaud (Henri Martin’s granddaughter and grandson-in-law).
