The 1989 Ruchottes-Chambertin was the first vintage to be fully overseen by Dr. Georges Mugneret's daughter, Marie-Christine. It has a rather conservative nose: touches of dry straw/bales of hay that infuse the light red fruit. It does not quite have the precision of earlier or later vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with orange peel and tangerine tincturing the red fruit, quite firm in the mouth with good structure. It is masculine and perhaps demonstrates excessive oak on the finish that dries it out. Not bad, although subsequent vintages show much better. Tasted at the Ruchottes-Chambertin vertical in London.

(with thanks to Dr. Reed Day). A fully mature and highly complex nose offers up plenty of sous bois, sauvage and plenty of Gevrey-style earth character along with hints of smoked meat and truffle. There is an intense minerality to the rich and attractively well-detailed middle weight flavors that initially displayed a bit of tannic dryness on the otherwise long finish. However, as the wine sat in the glass the tannins softened and while they did not disappear completely, with food they did not detract materially from the overall enjoyment. In sum, this is a lovely wine that is, unlike many '89s today, still holding well. Tasted twice.
