The 1985 Ruchottes-Chambertin is bestowed with this vintage’s quintessential bouquet: ebullient, almost ravishing raspberry and Morello cherry scents cross-stitched with pressed flowers and orange zest. It conveys so much energy and vivacity: like a beaming five-year old and just as disarming. The palate is beautifully balanced with tart acidity. There is superb tension that effortlessly counterbalances the sweetness on the playful finish. Whilst not as profound as more recent vintages this is clearly a standout of that decade and it continues to drink beautifully now and beyond. Tasted at the Ruchottes-Chambertin vertical in London.

The Ruchottes-Chambertin is out and out great stuff. The superb purity of fruit, the remarkable delineation of flavors, the structure and length suggest that it will last and perhaps even improve until at least the year 2000. Dr. Georges Mugneret made great wines in 1953, 1966, and 1978, but his 1985s are indeed special.
