The 2009 Gevrey-Chambertin Coeur du Roi impresses for its superb delineation and balance. Fresh, perfumed aromatics complement the radiant fruit in this expressive, silky Burgundy. Dark red cherries, spices and licorice wrap around the insistent finish. Anticipated maturity: 2021-2034. Importer: The Sorting Table, Napa, CA; tel. (707) 603-1461

(Dugat's largest village cuvee ): Good full red. Aromas of currant, plum and mocha reminded me a bit of Bordeaux. Fat and sweet, with superripe, almost decadent flavors of cherry, black raspberry, spices and leather. The big tannins reach the front teeth on the long finish, which leaves behind notes of leather and damp earth. Not a particularly refined style but full-blown and imposing for village wine.

(from vines ranging from 50 to 100 years of age; this wine and the Evocelles were fermented with about 50% whole clusters) Very dark red. Aromas of blackberry, creme de cassis, violet and minerals. Fatter on entry than the Evocelles, then less open in the middle, spreading out horizontally to saturate the palate. Drier and more serious than the Evocelles-tougher today. This rather powerful village wine will need bottle aging.

50- to 100-year-old vines. Very dark. Very deep and dense and intense, freshness on the front palate. Even racy, quite exciting so long as you like his pretty heavily oaked style. 75% new oak for this. A rather lighter touch. (JR)
