Healthy mid ruby. Beautiful sweet concentrated cherry and spice with hints of graphite and incense. Amazing concentration and energy yet not heavy or plump at all. Fantastic balance between grainy firm tannins, pure fruit and tangy acidity. Not ready by far, but hard to resist its youthful energy. (WS)

The estate's top selection, the 2008 Brunello di Montalcino Madonna delle Grazie, is plush, rich and authoritative. At the same time, though, it isn't materially better or more complex than the straight bottling, but rather a darker wine with bolder, bigger texture. Rose petals, licorice, sweet red berries and game linger on the powerful, incisive finish.

Over the last few vintages, Il Marroneto has been one of the more dynamic properties in Montalcino. The two 2008s I tasted were both terrific. Concentrated ruby with orange tinges on the rim. Reluctant to open up. Spice and cherry liqueur. A little coarse and jammy on the palate, but with good length. Rustic, stalky tannin. (WS)
