The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon from Casa Piena is just as impressive as it has always been. Rich, ample and powerful, the 2013 exudes class. Sweet tobacco, herbs, menthol and licorice wrap around a core of intense red fruit. The flavors are bright, vibrant and intense throughout, but my sense is that the 2014 is still improving. This is a terrific showing from Casa Piena and winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown.

This wine emerges from the southern Yountville sector of Napa Valley from a vineyard on State Lane. Dense purple with notes of blueberry and blackberry liqueur, spring flowers, graphite and licorice. The wine is impressively deep, medium to full-bodied with substantial tannin and structure, befitting most classic 2013s. Give it another 2-3 years of cellaring and drink it over the following 20+ years.
The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon has turned out beautifully. For the first time I can recall, a Casa Piena Cabernet has a real sense of brightness, tension and acidity to balance some of the richness that is so inherent of this site. Blood orange, iron, smoke, red-toned fruit, mint and chalk are some of the signatures. Thomas Brown and his team have done a terrific job here.
Huge, super-rich and voluptuous, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the most open wines of the vintage. The flavors are bold, intense and dark, yet there is good underlying energy through the mid-palate and finish.
