The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon has developed beautifully since I last tasted it this past Spring. Savory herbs meld into sweet red berries, leather, tobacco and cedar. Today the 2011 is distinctly salty and vibrant on the palate, with superb energy, focus and delineation. There is a creaminess and pure texture to the fruit that is hugely appealing. The 2011 will drink well early, but it should also develop beautifully in bottle. In 2011, the Casa Piena Cabernet is a bit more restrained than it usually is, but is also utterly impeccable and classy. This is a fabulous showing from Casa Piena.

It will be interesting to see where the 2011 goes in the next year, but all the signature of this site are present. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026. Carmen Policy’s wines continue to get better. Frankly, this is an amazing level of quality for a property that was only planted in 2003 and produced its first wine in 2006. Winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown is at the helm. He and his team clearly have a passion for this site located near the intersection of the Silverado Trail and Yountville Cross. www.casapiena.com
