Score 97+/100 · Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Dec 2016

What a pure pleasure it is to revisit the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon. Even though the 2013 is hard as nails, its pedigree and potential are both amply evident. Huge beams of tannin support a core of huge, inky fruit. Towering and completely enveloping in all of its dimensions, the 2013 won't be ready to drink for many years. Those lucky enough to own it can look forward to several decades of exceptional drinking.

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is off the charts. Intensely aromatic, vibrant and pulsating with energy, the 2013 is absolutely majestic in its beauty. Graphite, crème de cassis, smoke, plums, bittersweet chocolate and spices build to a dramatic finish laced with violets, lavender, smoke, licorice and inky blue/purplish fruit. The tannins are nearly buried by the sheer intensity of the fruit, but they are there, along with veins of saline-infused minerality that give the wine much of its shape and overall feel. The 2013 is a total knock-out, but it won’t be ready to drink for many years. Over the last year, the 2013 has really grown. It is a dazzling effort from brothers Alex and Graeme MacDonald. Production is up to a whopping 227 cases.

MacDonald's 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is shaping up to be a jewel of a wine. In 2013 the flavors are darker, inkier and deeper, as they were in the 2010, but with perhaps a touch more finesse and overall energy. Iron, graphite and a host of mineral-inflected notes give the finish much of its drive, while hints of white flowers, orange peel and spices add an exotic flair. This is a hugely promising wine from brothers Alex and Graeme MacDonald.
