The 1997 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is another stunner. The opulence of the year comes through in a Riserva that emphasizes textural opulence and creaminess above all else. In that sense, it shares some stylistic qualities with the 1983s and 1990s. Ripe, sweet tannins enshroud a core of juicy Sangiovese fruit. This hedonistic, sexy Riserva is still so young. Well-stored bottles will offer tremendous pleasure over the next 20 years, maybe more.

The 1997 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is absolutely stellar. Rich, sumptuous and exotic, the 1997 possesses stunning mid-palate sweetness, density and textural richness. A rush of blood orange, red cherry jam, mint, hard candy, cranberry and star anise give the 1997 its heady, intensely aromatic profile. As it has aged, the 1997 has shed some baby fat, yet it remains exceptionally beautiful and sumptuous. It is one of my favorites for current drinking. This bottle in particular is stellar.

The 1997 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is rich, flamboyant and exceptionally beautiful. The ripeness of the vintage comes through loud and clear in the wine’s soft contours, and yet the 1997 is incredibly well-balanced and harmonious. I wish I owned more of it.
