Next, we move into to a flight of Riservas, vintages I expected to be quite open and ready to drink. The 2000 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva does not disappoint. Medium in body, silky and perfumed, the 2000 is a fine place to offer maximum drinking pleasure today. Hints of plum, spice, leather and dried flowers grace this pliant, super-expressive Brunello. The 2000 is all elegance and class. It’s a fine choice for drinking now.

The 2000 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is another wine that looks like it will offer its best drinking sooner rather than later. Floral, expressive and lifted, the 2000 possesses mid-weight structure and all the attributes that will allow it to age well for another decade or so.
The 2000 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a delicate, aromatically nuanced wine. Sweet floral notes, dried cherry and tobacco all lift from the glass. Today, the 2000 does not appear to have the structure of the very best years. If anything, it comes across as a rare Soldera wine that will drink best over the medium-term.
Pale ruby. Such a different colour from most Brunellos of this era! Not much on the nose either when just opened or the next day. Light, fresh on the palate – a little burgundian but definitely crisp and savoury rather than sweet. A little build and grip on the finish but not nearly as impressive as the Vigna Intistieti 2000 was in 2006. (JR)

Soldera is one of the most highly rated, fiercely collected wines of Italy. The winery is based in the Brunello di Montalcino, however the estate is no longer labelled as a Brunello, following a fall out with the consortium. Made from 100% Sangiovese, the wine is currently bottled as a Toscana IGT.
