The 1990 Côte-Rôtie La Turque has plenty of red fruit on the glossy nose, touches of aniseed and leather emerging with time, quite high-toned as La Turque often is. The palate is full-bodied with a veneer of glycerin, backward and muscular on the mid-palate with a ripe, sweet, cassis-driven finish. I would actually give this another four to five years in the cellar.

I thought this was a Guigal LaLa but to my shame didn’t recognise it, despite drinking it just three nights previously! 'It’s the context,' Peter Gago said, consolingly and certainly this wine seemed so much lighter when served alongside the heft of a range of Granges than it did when served with no more preamble than Krug 1990 – and a Jaboulet Les Jamelles 1971 Côte Rôtie afterwards. Essence of Syrah on the nose. Lively fresh and dry (as opposed to sweet) – much racier and subtler than I was expecting from having read other tasting notes on this wine. The tannins are already nicely resolved. High toned minerals – dry and refreshing – very clean and brisk. (JR)

Relatively light blackish tawny; oldest looking (of the 1990 LaLas). Seems the most subdued (cf La Mouline and La Landonne) by far, if melded. Seems relatively simple and yet there are lots of tannins underneath. It isn’t flattering to taste. Quite a dry end. (JR)
