The 1989 Coutet has a delightful bouquet with yellow plum, orange blossom and honeysuckle that opens beautifully with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, perhaps more complex than the 1988 with marmalade, quince and spices. There is plenty of freshness on the finish with a saline aftertaste. This is an excellent Coutet and the pick of the 88-90 triumvirate. Tasted from an ex-château bottle served at the estate.

The 1989 Coutet, a blend of 80% Sémillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc, is pale to medium amber colored and scented of crème brûlée, preserved peaches and lemon tart aromas with hints of honey-coated nuts, cinnamon toast and rose water. It has a wonderfully refreshing palate packed with evolved honey-nut and baking spice layers, finishing very long with a citrus peel lift.

This was one of the few wines where the 1989 was the superior offering. The richest, sweetest, and fattest of the 1988, 1989 and 1990 vintages, it offers a pure nose of pineapples, full body, and excellent concentration. Wine Advocate.April, 1995
