This is a fabulous bottle of the 1998 Montrachet, the best I have ever had. Tropical and exotic in the glass, with striking layers of nuance, the 1998 is super-expressive on this night. Honey, tangerine oil and spice add character to the vivid, textured finish. A rich fabric of aromas, flavors and textures makes the 1998 absolutely compelling. Tasted at the DRC Montrachet charity event in New York.

The 1998 Montrachet is a perfect wine for drinking now, as all the elements have come together nicely over the last few years. Scents of white truffle, popcorn, butter, orange peel and apricot jam add nuance throughout. Veins of inner sweetness give the 1998 much of its oily, sensual personality, yet the 1998 remains a distinctly mid-weight wine with less of the sheer opulence than is often found in the domaine’s Montrachet.
The 1998 Montrachet is another wine that is quite complete today. A lovely interplay of textures and flavors opens up effortlessly in the glass. Orange/apricot marmalade, butter and sweet spice are all pushed forward in an ample, unctuous Montrachet that delivers notable breath and textural resonance with plenty of tropical overtones from the presence of botrytis. This is another vintage that is very much in the sweet spot today.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti or simply “DRC” is without doubt the most famous domaine in Burgundy and one of the most famous producers on earth. The Grand Cru vineyard from which it takes its name produces the world’s most expensive wine by a long margin.
