The 2008 Montrachet is a touch reduced and not fully expressive. Several recent bottles have shown more in line with what is typical of the 2008: a rich, hedonistically intense wine endowed with tremendous oiliness, textural intensity and heavy botrytis character. Two thousand-eight remains one of my all-time favorite vintages of the domaine’s Montrachet. Tasted at the DRC Montrachet charity event in New York.

The 2008 Montrachet from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti ranks amongst not only the best vintages that I have tasted from the domaine, but possibly the greatest white Burgundy I have ever tasted. The nose is breathtaking in terms of its precision and mineralité . There are not overt, easily definable aromas in situ, more an articulation of the vineyard that translates every single atom where it came from. The palate is bewitching in terms of its perfect bead of acidity, laser-like focus and the vein of salinité that leaves you begging for more. This is close to perfection. Tasted at the mature white Burgundy dinner in Hong Kong.

One of the real standouts in this tasting DRC’s 2008 Montrachet is utterly captivating from the very first taste. Exotic and flamboyant to the core, with notable botrytis influence, the 2008 represents the essence of hedonism in white wine. Tropical fruit, butter, smoke, pastry, honey and wild flowers infuse the oily, viscous finish. The 2008 has long been a favorite. Tonight it is once again fabulous.

The 2008 Montrachet is one of the more overtly exotic wines in this tasting. Heavily botrytised notes come through in waves of apricot and orange marmalade, smoke, spices, orange peel and crème brulée. The rich, unctuous style might not appeal to all readers, but I find the 2008 overwhelmingly beautiful. The 2008 is a brash, almost arrogant wine that grabs the taster by the throat and demands attention. Mission accomplished. This is a superb showing from the 2008.
