FINE+RARE, Oct 2023

Coming from a six-hectare vineyard with 65-year-old vines situated in Cerequio, the 2019 Barolo Conteisa is delicate in colour but profound and jampacked with notes of ripe dark cherries, dried petals, and more austere discreet hints that are almost herbaceous on the nose. The wine has a more structured palate than one would expect from the nose. It is opulent and concentrated and feels very youthful with superb potential. The balance and length are impressive. Some savoury notes appear on the mid-palate leading to a very long finish. This could be approachable now but will surely keep improving for another 15-20 years.

The Gaja 2019 Barolo Conteisa is a smooth operator with forest floor, dried fruit, autumn leaf and pickled plum from Japan with elements of both saltiness and sweetness. Conteisa goes for the high notes with floral tones, violet and something brittle like a laurel leaf. Its texture is very silky and tight. The wine persists with a smooth and long tenor.

The 2019 Barolo Conteisa is stunning. A wine of grace, power and finesse, the 2019 is immediately captivating. Crushed flowers, cinnamon, red berry fruit and rose petal are all beautifully lifted, all wrapped by silky La Morra tannins that add to its finesse. Readers will find an exquisite Barolo endowed with tremendous class. The 2019 is just sublime.

A powerful and tannic wine with mushroom, forest flower, bark, and black tea aromas and flavors. Full and chewy. This is a young nebbiolo that needs time to soften. Better after 2029.
