Mature raspberry leaf nose with a whiff of tobacco but driven by ripe berries. The acidity is still quite high but the body is full in balance with lots of grippy young tannins and steely backbone. Great potential for ageing.

The 2008 Pavillon Rouge de Margaux has a bright raspberry pastille and strawberry scented bouquet with just a slight copper piping aromas tucked underneath that personally I found distracting. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, quite edgy tannin. I admire the fruit here, tobacco-tinged blackberry and bilberry, more graphite scents surfacing towards the finish. It feels persistent in the mouth and should offer another five or six years in drinking pleasure. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 10-Year On tasting.
Tasted blind. Light, rather simple nose. A bit aggressively extracted. The opposite of mellow and the sandy tannins in abundance on the end demand food. Falls away a bit. (JR)
Black cherry, light body, lifted acidity and moderate fleshiness. A bit of violet perfume on the finish with some chocolate too. Subtle but definite complexity. (RH)
