Rocking stuff, the 2005 Château Langoa Barton has a deep ruby/plum hue as well as medium to full-bodied, aromas and flavors of ripe currant and assorted black fruits as well as some classic tobacco, spicy wood, and underbrush notes. With a round, mouthfilling, concentrated mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and it’s brilliant Saint-Julien to enjoy over the coming two decades.

Ruby red in colour, bright reflections, crushed stone, raspberry coulis, rose petals, liqourice. At an excellent moment to drink, this is generous and joyful with so much St Julien finesse. A clear sign of the briliance of 2005, one to look out for, could even work slightly chilled as the tannins are very fine at this point. Another one to feel pretty happy about if you bought it En Primeur. 70% new oak for ageing, Michel Raoul technical director, Eric Boissenot consultant.
The 2005 Langoa Barton is a wonderful surprise. Bright, fresh and so alluring, the 2005 is one of the under the radar jewels of the year. Freshly cut flowers, ripe red berry fruit, mint and blood orange give the 2005 striking aromatic lift and energy to match its mid-weight personality. This classy, polished Saint-Julien is a total delight. I wish I had a case in the cellar.
Tasted blind. Very fragrant and winning. Dense, with coffee notes. Mint too. Ambitious. Dry tannins and just a bit dead on the end but very sincere. (JR)
About the producer
Hugh Barton purchased this estate, alongside Second Growth Ch. Léoville Barton, in the 1820s. Classified as a Third Growth and run by Lilian Barton with her children Damien and Mélanie today, the 20 hectares of vines produce some of the appellation’s most elegant wines – and at reasonable prices.
