(as with the Echézeaux, the yield here was just seven hectoliters per hectare): Dark red-ruby. The brooding, medicinal scents of black cherry and licorice suggest an extremely concentrated wine. At once sweeter and even more tannic than the Echézeaux, conveying a powerful impression of extract but also uncanny cut to its dark fruit and saline mineral flavors. Finishes with explosive length. The impression of chewiness and solidity verges on extreme, and this wine is likely to need a minimum of a decade of bottle aging. Incidentally, both this wine and the Echézeaux will be bottled entirely in magnums.

The 2016 Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru was cropped at seven hectoliters per hectare, and it handles the sway of the barrel in superior fashion to that of the Echezeaux, at least at the moment. There is crisp blackberry and bilberry fruit, fine mineralité and a whiff of wild heather and drizzly moorland. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin. It is underpinned by crisp acidity, and here I discerned more red fruit vis-à-vis the Echézeaux, blessed with a tender but sustained and poised finish. This is classy, and I suspect this year, a step up from the Echézeaux.
Deeper soil with clay. Very deep crimson. More restrained nose than Échezeaux but more dense and much less evolved. Very powerful finish. Polished, majestic black fruit with real fireworks. Real briskness and freshness as well as the density. (JR)

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti or simply “DRC” is without doubt the most famous domaine in Burgundy and one of the most famous producers on earth. The Grand Cru vineyard from which it takes its name produces the world’s most expensive wine by a long margin.
