Medium brick red-colored, the 2020 Barolo Ravera Bricco Pernice is forward and wound up on the nose with lifted notes of orange peel, stemmy spices, clove, and cranberries and wet stones. The palate has a more supple and relaxed nature, with a medium-bodied and elegant feel, good balance, and a haunting, lasting perfume on the finish. It is more accessible right now but should offer a wide window for enjoyment over the next 20 years. Coming from this sheltered and slightly warmer microclimate within Ravera, entirely planted to the Lampia clone of Nebbiolo, they incorporate about 20% of stems in the fermentation, which adds to its more lifted and brightly spiced profile. Each of the Elvio Cogno wines for this report were tasted at the estate, above the vines of Ravera in Novello. Sadly, one of my favorite wines in the range will be no more after this year, as the pre-phylloxera Barbera vines are no longer able to produce enough, and they will be replanting the vineyard.

This wine comes from a two-hectare site within the greater Ravera MGA and sees one more year of aging, for a total of 36 months in large Slavonian casks. The Elvio Cogno 2020 Barolo Ravera Bricco Pernice (with only 6,000 bottles made) is very determined and focused. You get blue and purple fruits, hard plum and spicy shadings of nutmeg and sweet earth. This vintage remains softly textured but intense overall.

Mid ruby with the beginning of orange tinges. Loads of minerally stony notes and cherry and raspberry notes with a touch of oatmeal and rosemary. Lush and fresh at the same time. Wired cool-climate raspberry fruit with the perfect dose of gravelly tannins adding loads of structure to the finish. Long and fine, while the tannins need time to settle. (WS)
