Tasting notes
The 2009 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico is one of the most distinctive wines in this collection of single-vineyard expressions. What stands out here are the mineral nuances of brimstone and granite that rise from the glass. Because the Montefico vineyard has very compact soils, with sunny, southern exposures, you get a bigger structure and fruit concentration as a result. This is also the most advanced or evolved of the 2009 Riservas. Because it is maturing faster than the other wines, you might consider opening this bottle a bit sooner.

Plenty of fruit and spices here, plus hints of flowers. Full body with chewy tannins and a long finish. Minerals too. Needs time to soften.
Good full, deep red. Brooding but pure aromas of black cherry, licorice and menthol. A step up in weight and opulence from the Ovello, offering mocha and mineral hints to its very ripe dark fruit flavors. Round and full but not heavy. The rather powerful finish features a medicinal minty nuance and serious tongue-drying tannins. A bit Barolo-like.
The 2009 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico is one of the more striking wines in the range. Deeply expressive with regard to place, the Montefico is laced with dark cherry, plum, menthol, licorice, spice notes, all supported by the firm, incisive tannins and vibrant salinity that are the hallmark of this great site. There is little doubt the Montefico is one of the highlights in this range of 2009 Riservas from the Produttori. This is a terrific showing. (AG)
