Score 93/100 · Drink 2018-2030, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate, Dec 2018

Medium garnet-brick colored, the 2004 Ancient Way Vineyard Summer's Vineyard has a fantastic nose of black cherries, blackberry pie and licorice with touches of fragrant earth and sautéed herbs plus wafts of smoked meat and menthol. It's laden with blockbuster black fruit preserves flavors, full-bodied and concentrated but not heavy in the mouth, with a seductively satiny texture and great length.

Dark ruby. Deeply pitched aromas of cassis, dried cherry and singed plum, with a smoky overtone and a suggestion of cured tobacco. Lush, sweet and smoky on the palate, offering superripe dark fruit flavors with suggestions of cola, chewing tobacco and mocha. Extremely rich and verging on thick, in the style of this bottling, but showing surprising vivacity, especially at a decade of age. A peppery note adds lift and bite to the long, smoky, gently tannic finish.

Inky ruby. Pungent dark berry and kirsch on the nose, along with a complex array of game, spice and floral accents. Lush and creamy, with concentrated blackberry and cassis flavors, gentle acidity and a building impression of Asian spices. Nothing jammy here. The expansive finish features building blackcurrant and bitter cherry fruit and impressive length.
