Deep red. Compelling perfume of dark berries, licorice, game, violet and bitter chocolate. Highly concentrated and penetrating, with superb sappiness and no easy sweetness to its pungent flavors of black raspberry, violet, brown spices, cocoa powder and pepper. Conveys a powerful projection of soil. This thick but youthfully imploded wine displays outstanding spine and grip on the unflagging finish.

Deep ruby-red. Incredible nose offers most of the essential Gevrey food groups: black raspberry, wild blackberry, roast coffee, game, minerals, cocoa. Incredibly sweet and deep, with a powerful, tactile sappiness allied to an impression of great subtlety. This black hole of a wine saturates the entire mouth with fruit without coming across as the slightest bit heavy. Here the 50% stem component works to support the power of the wine, notes Bernstein. Extraordinarily broad and primary, and one of the longest 2008s of my November tour. Time stopped while I had this in my mouth.

85-year-old vines that the owner wants to pull out. Just millerandé grapes. Blackish crimson. Reduced nose. But great juicy fruit on the palate. Still a little dry on the finish but very ambitious. Truly, thoroughly grand cru build. Fine and racy. He loves the way the acid balances the ripe fruit. (JR)
