Score 90+/100 · Drink 2020-2024, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Oct 2017

(this is the last vintage for this bottling, as the Grenache Blanc will go into Reynvaan's white Grenache bottling): Medium-deep red, not too bright. Perfumed but slightly subdued aromas of candied red fruits, minerals and spices. Then juicy and rather dark on the palate; not a fat style but nicely fine-grained. Finishes quite tight and dry, and a bit youthfully unyielding. The tannins here are a bit sharper than those of the Foothills Reserve Syrah, calling for cellaring. This isn't yet coming alive but I like the vibrancy brought by the high-acid Grenache Blanc.

Coming from the estate vineyard in the rocks and blend of 92% Syrah and 8% Grenache Blanc, the 2014 The Unnamed Syrah is medium-bodied, supple and lightly textured, with an understated, elegant style. Offering classic plum, peppery herbs, olive and earth aromas and flavors, it's a beautiful wine that shines for its purity and elegance. Drink it over the coming 6-8 years.
