Ungrafted vines over 130 years old – the ‘grand cru’ site of Paso Robles. Spontaneous fermentation. Aged for 15 months in oak barrels, 80% used, 20% new (80% French oak, 20% American). Bottled unfined and unfiltered. Organic-certified vineyard. Heady but structured with a claret-like build and savour, believe it or not! Perhaps the 2024 will become as remarkable as this? (JR)

Full bottle 1,312 g. The only wine in this selection of serious Zins available in the UK not in a straight-sided bordeaux bottle. Instead, sloping shoulders with a lipped rim. Bright, glowing crimson with a pale rim. Very heady, perfumed and different from the northern California examples in the rest of this tasting. Opulent, juicy. Almost rude in its impact on the palate and then there are drying tannins on the end. There's a bit of a hole towards the end of the palate. I much prefer the nose to the palate. Really rather hard work at the moment. (JR)

The 2021 Zinfandel Ueberroth Vineyard is plush, layered and exquisitely vivid. Graphite, blueberry jam, licorice, lavender, cloves and savory accents build into a crescendo of aromas, flavors and texture. The Ueberroth is a wine of tremendous complexity and nuance. Then again, this site planted in the 1880s often yields wines of tremendous character. Stunning.

Still in barrel, the 2021 Zinfandel Ueberroth Vineyard has youthfully kaleidoscopic aromas of Morello cherries, peach and orange peel and nuances of wild mint, aniseed and potpourri. The full-bodied palate is bursting with generous, nuanced fruit. It has notable freshness and pleasantly chewy tannins, and it offers a layered finish. It's very expressive so far.
