Dark ruby/garnet with some lightening at the edge, this wine shows notes of licorice, smoke, earth, and plum and black currants in a medium-bodied, soft, very evolved style. It is fully mature and best drunk over the next decade. Last tasted, 4/02.

The 1989, which I had been told was close in quality to the 1990, comes across as a smaller-scaled wine. The color is a moderately dark, opaque ruby/purple, and the nose offers up Grenache-like aromas of peanut butter and black-cherries. This spicy, tannic, medium to full-bodied 1989 is promising, but it does not possess the profound, unreal concentration and stature of the 1990. The 1989 requires 2-3 additional years of bottle age; it will last as long as the 1990, but it will never achieve the greatness of that vintage.
