Tasting notes
(from 80+ year old vines). Once again the perfumed nose is ripe yet cool and airy with its combination of various dark berries, violet and spice wisps. The rich and solidly concentrated medium-bodied flavors display unusually good power on the stony, very firm and long finish that is beautifully well-balanced. This is a Fontenys of refinement but it is nonetheless built-to-age.

The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Fontenys stands out this year, wafting from the glass with notes of cherries and cassis mingled with licorice and violets. Medium to full-bodied, rich and layered, with lively acids, powdery tannins and a suave, seamless profile, it's well worth seeking out.
The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Fontenys 1er Cru is a little taciturn on the nose with well-defined red fruit (cranberry and raspberry) and more floral scents unfolding in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with chiseled tannins. It's sapid and spicy toward the finish but also quite backward. This will demand four or five years in the bottle before it shows what it is capable of.
