FINE+RARE, Oct 2024

Fourrier’s plot of Clos Saint-Jacques is less than a hectare (0.89 hectares) and sits right next door to Rousseau’s parcel. The vines are over 100 years old and run the full length of the vineyard, from the top’s white marl to the bottom’s heavier clay. It’s always a standout in the range, and it’s no different in 2023, instantly enticing on the nose – with gorgeous spice and haunting, lifted florals. The fruit – wild raspberry and dainty cherry – is interlaced with stony minerality, an earthy power that underlines the wine’s delicacy. With beautiful balance, this is pure, long and very impressive.

(Sweet Spot)<br /> (from .89 ha parcel). A restrained if exceptionally pretty nose speaks of spiced liqueur-like aromas of various dark berries including cassis, plum and an interesting hint of jasmine tea. There is a really lovely sense of vibrancy to the even more mineral-driven flavors that are blessed with a bit better mid-palate density before concluding in a firm, serious and beautifully persistent finale. This well-balanced and quite powerful effort should easily reward a decade plus of cellaring.

Sensual and perfumed, the 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques is a beauty, bursting with notes of sweet wild berries mingled with orange zest, rose petals, peonies, cinnamon and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and supple, it's satiny and layered, with a deep core of fruit and a long, saline finish.

The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has an open-knit bouquet with brambly red fruit, certainly without the intensity of the 2022. It's stubborn compared to the other Premier Crus. The palate is medium-bodied and very refined. It is quite understated for a Clos Saint-Jacques, with beautifully balanced filigree tannins and a silky finish that lingers long in the mouth. This is a tender CSJ.
