The 2023 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese (Auction) is very clear and precise on the nose that shows delicate notes of finely crushed slate and candied lemon rind notes. Very filigreed yet also lush and generous on the palate, this is a weightless, highly finessed and elegant, savory and sustainably structured wine with generous and dense, very persistent and stimulating fruit with lychee flavors and a long, highly stimulating, saline and crystalline finish. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine from AP 17 24 in January 2025.

AP number 08 24. Has that touch of white mushroom that I found on the Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett, as well as the touch of smokiness. Cool, vibrant, with a fine acid tension to the very end, so that the sweetness is disguised. Needs bottle age to become more complex. (JH)

The 2023 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese opens with a serene, stony, salty slaty breeze. The palate is exquisitely fine and very bright, luminous even, soaring upward as it reaches down into the slate, embodying the total elegance of the site. Slenderness and serenity are exemplary.

Serene and understated, the 2023 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese #17 comes with some reductive funk on the nose. Slightly creamy orange zest defines the palate, while the finest freshness spells tension and brightness. Every atom of this wine is full of aroma, yet it speaks softly. This displays wonderful Prüm elegance combined with the statuesque nature of the Sonnenuhr—purest poise. Available at auction: 330 bottles, 24 magnums. (Sweet)
