Score 93/100 · Drink 2014-2023, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Jun 2014

The 2003 Barolo Cannubi has aged exceptionally well. Sweet tobacco, plum, dried cherries and menthol all flesh out in a round, supple Barolo loaded with class. Early tertiary notes develop gradually. The tannins have mostly softened, making the 2003 an excellent choice for drinking now and over the next handful of years. During this era, Chiara Boschis used 100% new oak, and that shows, but only in the wine's textural depth and volume. A long, resonant finish rounds things out nicely.

Barolo. Minerally, sweet dried-fruit nose, with a perfumed edge to it. Rich, yes, but with fantastic balance and captivating tannins. Modern and ripe and succulent. (WS)

The 2003 Barolo Cannubi reveals lovely texture and depth in its fruit, along with tobacco, tar, scorched earth and leather notes that emerge with air. The 2003 is less fresh and aromatic than is normally the case, and this doesn't look to be an especially long-lived wine.

The 2003 Barolo Cannubi reveals lovely texture and depth in its fruit, along with tobacco, tar, scorched earth and leather notes that emerge with air. The 2003 is less fresh and aromatic than is normally the case, and this doesn’t look to be an especially long-lived wine. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2015. Chiara Boschis has once again turned out two very pretty Barolos in 2003. The wines have a fair amount of new oak, but with time, the specific terroir qualities of the sites she works with always come through. These 2003 Barolos are a great example of how a less-well regarded vineyard outperformed one of the region’s most historic sites in this freakishly hot and dry vintage.
