The 2007 Barolo Per Cristina was made in limited numbers (with 4,000 bottles produced) and spends five long years in barrique. It exhibits an unabashed and brazen attitude with full emphasis on opulent fruit richness. The wine's appearance and its mouthfeel are equally layered, rich and velvety. Massive aromas of dark fruit and spice make a fitting compliment. Soft tannins fill the palate, adding meaningful intensity and persistency. This is a beautiful effort that will appeal to Barolo enthusiasts and serious collectors alike.

Good full red. Deeply pitched nose offers raspberry, musky tobacco, leather and exotic white fruit notes. Lush, mellow and very ripe, displaying outstanding depth and energy for 2007 and complicating notes of menthol and marzipan. Classic Barolo in a more rustic style than the 2010s, but Clerico told me he prefers this kind of Barolo. Wonderfully sweet, gripping, still-youthful wine with dusty, building tannins supported by sheer depth of flavor. And a huge success for the vintage.

The 2007 Barolo Percristina is another massive, sumptuous Barolo from Domenico Clerico. Sweet roses, dark red fruit and new leather are just some of the nuances that are woven into its rich, textured frame. Despite the ripeness of the vintage, the 2007 comes across as a rather delicate Percristina at this stage. Percristina is the only Barolo still made with 100% new oak and is now taking a direction that increasingly stands apart from the other Baroli here.

It’s great to see Domenico Clerico pretty much back to his normal self after a bout with illness over the last few years. Despite having made so many dazzling wines in the past, I can’t help thinking Clerico’s best Baroli may still lie ahead. Maceration times have been gradually lengthened, the use of new French oak has come down in most of the wines and there are rumblings that larger casks are on the way. As always, I tasted a large selection of wines during my recent visit to the estate, including 4-5 vintages of each of the Baroli. Clerico’s 2006s are emotional, moving wines that are living up to the praise I bestowed upon them last year. The 2007s are stratospheric, while the 2008s are developing very well, albeit in a more classic style than the decidedly exuberant 2007s. In 2008 Clerico has a Barolo from his vineyard in Bussia that is still being raised separately and may be bottled on its own. Based on multiple tastings, it is a special Barolo. It’s still early for the 2009s, but today they are less viscerally thrilling, pretty much in line with the way most wines of that year are showing right now.
