The smoky and spicy notes of barrique-ageing are still in charge of the sensory perception, although the underlying fruit and minerality are beginning to make their presence felt. The Herrenberg is compact, powerful and quite austere in its youthful stage, firm tannins and a generous acidity laying the foundation for a long life. At the same time the level of toasting is chosen carefully to not suppress the emergence of dark berry fruit in the long term. The uninitiated may also struggle with the almost tactile expression of dusty minerality imposed on the wine. A cool and rocky monument. (MS)

The slaty slopes of the Herrenberg find their sensory expression in this intricate composition of smoky bacon, dark berries, dusty minerality and spicy cedar. Although very compact with powerful tannins, there is enough room for the juicy taste of dark berries and dusty spices. Alexander Stodden has perfected his judgement of the grade of toasting that benefit his wines in the long term, and although this may appear quite pronounced at the early stage, it is never over-bearing. Late picking has resulted in great extract even under the challenging conditions of 2013, and at the same time the acidity of the vintage has been perfectly harnessed. (MS)
