The finest Echezeaux I have tasted from this estate, the 2003 is produced from a parcel located in the upper reaches of its grand cru, in the Rouge du Bas sector. Aromatically, candied red cherries and abundant spices explode from the glass of this medium to full-bodied wine. Concentrated, admirably balanced, rich, and intense, it coats the palate with dense layers of sweet red as well as black fruits. Fresh yet extremely ripe, it vaunts copious quantities of tannin in its chocolate-laced, exceptionally long finish. Projected maturity: 2010-2020. Saturated, bright ruby-red. Black cherry, licorice and a floral nuance on the nose. Full, sweet and minerally, with darker fruit flavors than usual for this grand cru. Another very large-scaled wine, with lovely sweetness of fruit and substantial tannins that arrive late. Quite different in style from the 2002 version.
