FINE+RARE, Nov 2024

The vines here average 30 years in age, spread over 16 hectares of the First Growth vineyard close to the Royal Tokaji winery. Rich red clay soils with volcanic rocks on a southwest-facing slope generally produce a structured and concentrated wine. The power of the site speaks here, with a rich, ripe and waxy nose. Heady florals – lily, jasmine – overlay exotic fruit, with mango and sweet peach. It’s generous and full on the palate, with glorious intensity and liquid honey lushness, but with searingly fresh, pithy acidity balancing it beautifully. 11% alcohol and 199.2g/l residual sugar.

Szt Tamás is a celebrated first growth vineyard sloping south-west towards the Royal Tokaji winery in Mád. From its highest point you can see across the Great Hungarian Plain. The soil is rich red clay interspersed with indigo and purple volcanic rocks on and below the surface. Royal Tokaji owns 16 hectares of parcels exclusively planted with Furmint vines with an average age of around 30 years. RS 199.2 g/l, TA 6.46 g/l. 13,350 bottles made. Meaty, substantial nose and very round fruit with a really positive impact on the palate. Absolutely ready to drink now though it has underlying structure – it's even slightly chewy underneath – to see it enjoy a long life. (JR)

The 2018 Tokaji Szt. Tamás 6-Puttonyos is a little reticent on the nose, but it only takes a few swirls to entice lilting scents of apricot, quince and subtle adhesive scents. Fine delineation. The palate is smooth and harmonious. Wow. This just glides across the senses, with a gorgeous viscous texture, hints of fig, apricot and yellow plums with a dash of stem ginger towards the finish. This is another outstanding release from the Royal Tokaji Co. in 2018. (199.2g/l residual sugar and 6.46g/l acidity)

Very complex nose of tropical fruit, wafers and dried flowers. Very minerally, with crushed stones and some herbal undertones. Medium- to full-bodied, structured and long, with an attractive, astringent texture. It’s almost velvety on the palate, showing savory and mineral notes in the finish. Fresh, focused and very gastronomic. Delicate finish. Drink or hold.
