Tasting notes
2022 Schrader To Kalon Vineyard Now sourced exclusively from the Constellation-owned section of To Kalon (rather than the Beckstoffer plot), this is an impressive wine. The nose is sweet and rich, offering incense, vanilla, baking spice and dried leather alongside plush, dark plum fruit. The palate is dense and mouth-filling, with a firm, velvet, mouth-coating tannin structure that frames the intense fruit. Cocoa and cloves complement the blueberry compote richness. A generous, voluptuous Cabernet Sauvignon that needs time. Aged in 100% new oak. 2022 Schrader Monastery Block From a single plot of To Kalon, up against the foothills of the Mayacamas, all planted to Clone 169 Cabernet Sauvignon, this was harvested at just one ton per acre (around 18-20hl/ha). The resulting wine is almost overwhelming in its intensity – much darker and more brooding versus the “straight” To Kalon bottling. It’s spicy and dark-fruited, with additional richness to the bramble fruit, vanilla essence and a note that is almost like cola. The palate is savoury with structured, drying tannins – an edge of smoky tar almost, and yet a tight core of black plum and blackberry fruit at its core, all balanced by a bite of bright acidity – cutting through the wine’s powerful palate. Aged in 100% new oak. 2022 Schrader Heritage Clone Schrader’s Heritage Clone comes from a single plot of Clone 31 Cabernet Sauvignon, the original clone planted by Robert Mondavi in To Kalon. The 2022 offers a nose of dried red cherry, kirsch and sweet spice – cinnamon, clove and cardamom, alongside pure vanilla bean and cedar. The structure here is more refined, the tannins present yet finer grained, with more lift to the acidity and mouth-watering fruit. Juicy cherries and blackcurrants are layered in amongst dried blackberry, prunes, tobacco, smoke and something that hints at caramel, with a twist of redcurrant on the long finish. Aged in 100% new oak.
