Scents of crushed stone, black olives, blueberries and blackberries swirl about on the nose of the 2019 Saint-Joseph Vignes de l'Hospice. The oak that was apparent prior to bottling is almost entirely concealed beneath waves of savory and fruity elements in this medium to full-bodied wine. Expansive on the palate and long on the finish, it's a charming, relatively forward example of this cuvée, yet it should be capable of aging well for up to two decades.

There’s so much to love about the 2019 Saint-Joseph Vignes de l'Hospice. Prominent menthol, pencil shavings, blackberry compote, delicate wood smoke and crushed violets enter the stage. Sexy and polished, the 2019 sports excellent flavor concentration and wraps it all up in a resonant finale. Give it another two years in bottle.

Coming from an incredible vineyard located just above the village of Tournon (which Marcel states matter of factly is the best terroir in the appellation), the 2019 Saint Joseph Vignes De L'Hospice reveals a deeper purple hue as well as an Hermitage-like style in both its aromatics as well as its structure. This makes sense, as the soils are basically identical. Blueberries, blackberries, burning embers, leather, and violets are just some of its nuances, and it's full-bodied on the palate, with a deep, concentrated mid-palate, wonderful tannins, and a great finish. Where the other Saint-Josephs show the ripe, sunny style of the vintage, this, as always, remains much more cool-climate like, focused, and almost austere. Aged 30 months in new barrels, it's a candidate for the wine of the vintage and will have 30 years of longevity.

100% Syrah. Cask sample. Tasted at the domaine. Beautiful nose with succulent pastille juiciness and purity with a strong smoked note . Such ripeness on the palate with beautiful depth and weight – the tannins are defined and sculpted – hard to believe it has 100% new oak. Plush and forward in a beautifully packaged, layered finish.
