The 2013 Toscana Sangiovese is the first wine Gianfranco Soldera made after a disgruntled former employee nearly destroyed all of the 2007s-2012s. An infant wine, the 2013 is seriously impressive from the very first taste. It offers up a dazzling interplay of Sangiovese fruit, rose petals, lavender, kirsch, hard candy and spice. Powerful yet elegant in the glass, with explosive energy, the 2013 is a marvel to behold.

The 2013 Sangiovese is the first wine at Soldera in which production bounces back to normal. Silky and beautifully perfumed in the glass, the 2013 is gracious, airy and wonderfully refined. Bright red cherry fruit, chalk, mint and wild roses soar out of the glass. It will be interesting to see where the 2013 goes in time. Over the years, I have learned that these wines have a way of transforming in bottle that is hard to predict. Today, the 2013 comes across as on the lighter side, although I have tasted some bottles that show more depth.

Bottled two months ago. Powerfully heady nose of sottobosco and dead leaves. On the palate it's as fresh as fresh veg – massive freshness after an initial impression of prunes. Extremely subtle and only medium weight. (JR)

Soldera

Soldera is one of the most highly rated, fiercely collected wines of Italy. The winery is based in the Brunello di Montalcino, however the estate is no longer labelled as a Brunello, following a fall out with the consortium. Made from 100% Sangiovese, the wine is currently bottled as a Toscana IGT.
