The 1995 remains a rather burly Monfortino. Dark-toned fruit, graphite, dried herbs, sage and menthol open with some coaxing. There’s a bit of wildness here, and yet the 1995 is one of the best mature Monfortinos for current drinking.

The 1995 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is another potent, old-school Monfortino. Over the last few years it has entered a gorgeous plateau of early maturity. Dried herbs, licorice, tar, leather and dried rose petal all open in the glass. The 1995 is burly and powerful, yet also the sort of wine that is compelling in its allure.

The 1995 Conterno Barolo Riserva Monfortino, on the other hand, is simply glorious. From one of the under the radar vintages of the 1990s, the 1995 is going through a brilliant phase today. Scorched earth, leather, tobacco, smoke and dried herbs add myriad layers of nuance to a wine that is old-school Barolo at its best.

Dark ruby. Patience, patience. The 1995 reveals all of the classic Monfortino aromas of tar, licorice, and super-ripe fruit, with more evolved sensations of leather and truffles, though the wine is still incredibly shut down, revealing just the barest hint of the massive fruit that today is hiding behind an imposing wall of tannins. Will another five years of bottle age be enough to coax this wine’s personality out of its shell? (AG)
