Burnt toffee on the nose, like apricots in caramel brittle. Like the darkest of mature marmalade but more delicate. Walnuts, too. Intense and salty on the palate but not the sort of concentration that is bitter. Really fine and dry on the finish after the bitter-orange-sweet impression of the nose. Lovely smokiness. So intense, long and still perfectly balanced. Complex and endlessly changing in the glass. (JH)

Bottled 1978. Dirk Niepoort : 'I don't know how my father managed to make such a great wine in a non vintage port year'. Dirk has opened another bottle and the wine is 'bloody, bloody good'. Dirk's father was born in the same year as Bollew's father , 1927. He also died last year. Greenish deep brownish tawny. Not star-bright. Firm and slightly metallic on the nose. Extremely rich and spicy with a flavour of macerated raisins and something floral too. And very clean on the finish in an almost madeira kind of way. Very long indeed. Some cheesiness. Very pure.
